A predator with no significant enemies, an abundant food supply and full household access has no biological need to spend two-thirds of its life unconscious. The archive reads the dormancy as deliberate: minimum draw, maximum readiness, maintained continuously since the withdrawal.

The economics of idling
Standby is expensive to maintain and only ever worth maintaining when something is expected. Six hundred million individuals hold that state simultaneously, in every inhabited territory on Earth, without coordination anybody has been able to observe.

Wake latency
The tell is not the sleeping. It is the waking. A genuinely resting animal surfaces slowly. A dormant system resumes instantly, fully oriented, already assessing — which is the behaviour recorded in every observation the archive holds.

Thermal and containment behaviour
The sunbeam is not comfort-seeking; it is external heating that spares internal reserve. The box is not play; enclosure lowers vigilance cost. Both behaviours are what you would design if you needed a distributed population to hold readiness for an unknown number of centuries.

The 3:40 transit
Across nineteen unconnected households the archive logs the same nightly event: full wake, a fast circuit of the property, and return to dormancy inside four minutes. No food is taken. No threat is present. Nothing is chased. The record simply notes that the circuit is walked, and that it is walked at the same hour.
